In a meeting with the Pakistan’s Foreign Secretary on Wednesday, the Indian High Commissioner has requested that Sarabjit Singh be immediately released on “humanitarian and sympathetic” grounds, said reports by Indian media.

India also proposed that Pakistan could also send Sarabjit to a third country for medical treatment, the Hindustan Times quoted India’s Ministry of External Affairs in Delhi.

“We are concerned at the condition of Shri Sarabjit Singh indicated by reports made available by doctors treating him in Jinnah Hospital,” said a statement issued by the Indian External Affairs ministry.

“Our High Commissioner has met the Pakistan Foreign Secretary and urged the Government of Pakistan to immediately release Shri Sarabjit Singh on humanitarian and sympathetic grounds so that he can benefit from the best available treatment in India,” it said.

“Alternatively we have also proposed that Shri Sarabjit Singh should be sent to a third country for proper medical treatment,” the statement added.

The Indian prisoner suffered head injuries as a result of a scuffle between prisoners at the Kot Lakhpath Jail last week.

Sarabjit Singh was attacked by two death row prisoners who apparently wanted to take revenge from the Indian prisoner. Singh is also on death row for carrying out terrorist activities in Pakistan.

Reports said the condition of the Indian prisoner was highly critical, with some saying he has been declared brain-dead.
