India will modernise its army and give a robust answer to china. When India has such a long border with an agressive country, there is no choice but be ready for any conflict. Apart from defense, it is necessary for India to stop buying low quality chinese goods.

China is spending ten times on its own military than what India does. So, the warning a little misplaced. Yes, it is a pity that poor countries like Inda and Pakistan have to spend so much on defense. But every country has to deal with its own demons.

Dear Ms. Lubna, But there seems to be no let down in Chinese arms build-up and China has been aggressively threatening smaller pacific nations like South Korea, Japan, etc. As being the larger nation and bigger economy, perhaps it should show a way unilaterally and set up an example for all other countries to follow toward the path of regional peace.

Indian army is not Pakistani army that has played with power. Indian generals are unknown to the public and will never arrest leave alone execute a PM.Ranting by a general who is not in Service has no meaning and the great success of recent official visit to China by Indian Defence Minister and the official statement that India does not even figure in the top military threats to China and Vice versa should open one's eyes.But then Pakistanis are entitled to some pleasure as they feel that China is their own country and its success in anything belongs to them.

India is not Pakistan where American and/or Chinese can come and attack us using drones. We need power to protect ourself. Advice to India??? who given?? Pakistan or China?? If Pakistan then first all of they resolve their problem with India and Afganistan. If China then they first of all they resolve their problem with Japan, Vietnam, Philippines, Taiwan, etc. India had never provoked anyone from their 10,000 history. Those war was happened with India it was due to other side initiation. If it was wrong then Today there would not be Bangladesh it would be East Bengal (Another Bengali state), no Bhutan (it would be North Eastern state), No Nepal (It would be North Indian state), No Sri Lanka (there would another South India state), no Mali (another Indian Islands). Name one country in chinese neighbourhood that hasn't received a chinese warning for one reason or the other, except of course Pakistan.This warning to India , by a non government individual , was probably instigated by the chinese government . I say that because of the timing the individual decided to come out of the woodwork. However the immediate rebuttal by the chinese was just to calm the Indian sensibilities .Secondly of all the dire warnings issued to various countries, i can't remember one that they actually carried out.

@Indian : I have also watched Mr Sethi YouTube program. He is a realistic man. I wish military and Government have similar view towards India. By nature Indians are not aggressive. India has never been an occupier. I see no reason why Pakistan is afraid of India. Bangladesh was created not cos of Indians rather Pakistani policy. Pakistan can't take on India militarily, however good to have expansive toys to play around and keep the high moral of defense establishment. For a nation, strong defense is very important, however need to be realistic in spending in defense. To my mind, Pakistan is not a threat to India. China is main challenge for the Indian nation in every aspect. Pakistan reaction to Indian defense spending is more like a baby cry and China exploits.

@Indian : It's not about who matches whom. All the three countries named are "developing" countries. We cannot afford spending thousands of crores of rupees on things that we are not going to use anyways. Better use it for Education, Health and Infrastructure.

@K G Surendran: Exactly. The moment bilateral trade between India and Pakistan increases, we cease to think of harming one another. To be honest to Pakistanis, majority of Indians don't have time to think about Pakistan and we dont see Pakistan as an adversary at all. We still feel bad that Partition had happened and that too, in the name of religion. If it had not happened, we would have been one of the Super Powers. For us, China is more important. We ar a Secular country and for us, any religious country is bad.

Author missed the point. India has a very militarized neighbor ,in China that has occupied large land and has design on lot more. How do you protect against such nation? If we want peaceful region, tell your friend in North to demilitarize and stop threatening India. China is a friend as long you are useful. It has threatened Japan, Vietnam, and others.

In Singapore you also see Chinese visiting Hanuman and Shiva temples. But it is in America, in places like Bell Labs, IBM Watson Research you find that Indians and Chinese have deep spiritual dharmik connections - Indian Dhyan becoming Chinese Zen. It would be very good idea if China and India integrate economically and physically. It was learned Chinese Ambassador to US who told us in 1988 in Bell Labs's auditorium that it was India who pulled China out of spiritual darkness, social degradation with the teaching of Yoga & Dhyan and spirituality brought by a huge monk from Andhra, BodhiDharma without asking chinese give up their culture, ancestral connections, language and Chinese native names. @concerned: East Pakistan was India's concern because India wanted resolution by May of 1971 so that the refugees who had streamed across the border had to be fed by India. Nixon refused to hear India's plea. So the action front had to be taken and it was done. Sing your mistakes first. Bravado is by performance not by words!

I will admit that the quality of discussions that one sees at Dawn are not to be found in Indian newspapers (with the possible exception of The Hindu). What China does not realize is, its threatening all its neighbors. China has uncomfortable relationships with Japan, Indonesia, India, Vietnam and S Korea. All these countries are doing very well economically and together can match China's growth. With USA seeing India as a counterweight to china and Russia being an old and reliable ally of India its going to be difficult for China to sustain. A Superpower without strong allies cannot sustain itself. The best example is Soviet Union. The reason why USA has survived is due to the support of Europe, Australia, Canada and other developed countries. Their aggresion on the border with India will hurt China more than India. The world sees China as a threat and that will not help its business for long.
