Mehdi Hassan, who died in Karachi at the age of 85, was one of the most accomplished male ghazal singers of his time.

The pitch - perfect vocalist was born in the Rajasthan village of Luna in 1927. He inherited his musical talent from his father, Ustad Abdul Azeem Khan, and was later tutored by his uncle, Ustad Ismail Khan.

Mehdi Hassan is said to have lent his voice in more than 300 films and he sang more than 5,000 songs in his lifetime.
