KARACHI, Sept 25: On a directive of a sessions court, a bailiff raided on Tuesday the office of the Sindh wildlife department (SWD) and recovered two men apparently kept there in wrongful detention.

The bailiff, Muddasir Hussain, got the detainees, Rashid and Chaman, said to be confined for a couple of days, released on a personal bond and directed wildlife officer Bashir to appear before the sessions court on Wednesday.

The bailiff said that he along with the applicant and a police team raided the SWD office located within the remit of the Artillery Maiden police station.

Both victims were found detained at the office, but the officials concerned failed to produce any document in order to justify their detention, he added.

“Everybody is bound to produce a suspect before the court within 24 hours after his or her arrest, besides it was also the responsibility of the wildlife deparment to inform the police station concerned about registration of a case,” the bailiff said and explained that the Artillery Maiden police had no information about any case lodged by the wildlife department.

Mohammad Javed filed a habeas corpus application under Section 491 of the criminal procedure code in court submitting that his brothers were running a shop in birds market in Saddar and they were picked up by personnel of the wildlife department in their workplace two days back and detained them at their office.

He contented that the victims were unlawfully detained and alleged that an official of the wildlife department was demanding money for their release.

The applicant prayed to the court for their recovery.

After a preliminary hearing, Additional District and Sessions Judge (south) Jalaluddin Soomro appointed the bailiff as raid commissioner and directed him to carry out a raid on the information of the applicant and recover the detainees if found in wrongful confinement.
