Construction of dam opposed

PESHAWAR, Aug 29: The residents of Chitral have opposed a plan to construct a private power station at Jaghor village and demanded of the government to stop its construction as it was an ‘illegal’ project.

Speaking at a press conference at Peshawar Press Club on Wednesday action committee general secretary Shezada Imran said that the dam had been planned at Jaghor Gol without taking NOC from Wapda.

He said that the plan had been initiated by former district nazim Maghfirat Shah but he did not take the people into confidence.

He alleged that the former nazim had initiated the plan for his personal benefits in order to collect money from some international NGOs.

“We have time and again contacted the local administration and police to stop the work on the power plant but to no avail,” he complained. —Bureau Report

Power supply disconnected

PESHAWAR, Aug 29: The Tribal Electricity Supply Company (Tesco) launched operation against defaulters and illegal connections in parts of the Khyber Agency here on Wednesday.

According to a Tesco statement, power supply was disconnected to seven factories including Sharif Ice Factory, Gul Wali Ice Factory, Younus Ice Factory, Kazim Ice Factory, Munir Ice Factory, Kamin Ice Factory and Abdul Haq Ice Factory at Shahkas area.

The Tesco staff also recovered Rs575,000 as arrears from the defaulting consumers during the operation. The chief executive of the power company, Pervez Khankhel Swati, directed all the field formations to continue the operation till recovery of all the outstanding areas from the defaulting industrial, commercial, irrigation and other government departments. —Bureau Report

Governor for quality education

PESHAWAR, Aug 29: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Barrister Masood Kausar has said that academic institutions should be protected from corruption, favoritism and other evils and should not be established only to make money.

He was chairing a meeting of the board of governors of the Institute of Management Sciences at Governor’s House here Wednesday. He said that a good teacher was the one who could produce brilliant students which could replace their teachers.

He said that many students could speak English fluently but they could not draft even a simple application and asked the officials to take action against such institutions which did not fulfil the standard criteria and basic requirements for an academic institution. —Bureau Report

PTI blasts govt corruption

KARAK, Aug 29: Pakistan Tehrik-i-Insaf leader Advocate Altaf Qadir has said that the Pakistan People’s Party government has snatched the available facilities from the masses through its corruption in public resources.

He was addressing a public gathering at Palosa Sar here on Wednesday. He alleged that PPP and its coalition partners had deprived the people of basic necessities of life.He said the elected representatives of district Karak were politicking on trivial issues and alleged that they had miserably failed to start any mega project in the district despite having hefty funds of oil and gas royalty. He claimed that no other political party could bring change in the country except the PTI and added that the people’s rush to join the party had proved its popularity. —Correspondent

Ex-policeman arrested

KOHAT, Aug 29: Police have arrested a former policeman who was expelled from service and was trying to again enter the department by appearing in the recently held examinations for fresh recruitment.

The services of the former constable had been terminated due to absence from duty, lethargy and disobedience last year.

A spokesman for district police said that he was inducted in the frontier reserve police as constable in 2008. And after his expulsion his appeal for reinstatement had also been rejected.

The former policeman has been arrested and a case of fraud under sections 417, 419 and 420 of PPC registered against him in the cantonment police station and sent to prison. —Correspondent

Booksellers arrested

PESHAWAR, Aug 29: The Federal Investigation Agency has arrested here on Wednesday several accused involved in violation of copyright laws.

An official of FIA crime circle told Dawn that a campaign had been launched against piracy of Oxford University Press books and copyright violation. In this regard a raid was conducted at many places in Charsadda.

He said that Niamatullah Shah had been arrested from Iqra Book Agency Tangi, Amjad Ali from Ali Book Agency Sardheri and Shah Hassan from Al-Khidmat Book Agency.

All the accused, he said, were involved in looting the innocent people by selling pirated books of Oxford University Press.

The official said that the raiding team led by inspector Shahid Ilyas had also recovered hundreds of fake books. Cases against the accused have been registered under the relevant laws. —Bureau Report
