Dispute claims three lives

PESHAWAR, Jan 28: A minor was among three persons killed as they were fired upon by their rivals with automatic weapons in Badbher, a suburban village of Peshawar district located on Kohat road, police said.

The reason behind the killing was stated to be a land dispute, said the police.

Gulab Sher, his wife and their eight-year-old son were at their home when the rival group attacked them. The relatives of the deceased registered FIR in Badbher police station against Dad Sher Khan.—APP

Hashish, heroine seized

KOHAT, Jan 28: Huge quantity of drugs was seized by police from a car coming from tribal area on Indus Highway here on Saturday.

Two inter-provincial smugglers -- Aaosalamim and his son Kareemullah -- were arrested and their car (LA-6792-Karachi) was impounded.

Riaz Khan Shaheed police said that the suspicious car was stopped near the Kohat tunnel toll plaza for checking. Upon search 30 packets of hashish weighing more than 33kg and two packets of opium of one kilogram each were recovered from it.

The smugglers had loaded the drugs in Darra Adam Khel.

They are residents of Tala Khel area of Bannu district. The police have initiated investigation into the case to know the dispatcher and the recipient of the contraband.—Correspondent

Eradicating fatal diseases

LAKKI MARWAT, Jan 28: MPL-N MPA Munawar Khan Marwat kicked off a three-day anti-polio drive by administering oral drops to several children at a ceremony held on the premises of district headquarters hospital Tajazai on Saturday.

Among others EDO health Dr Mohammad Iqbal Khan, DDO Dr Abdul Rehman, National Immunisation Programme district coordinator Dr Tariq Saleem Marwat, NRDF’s field coordinator Shah Anwar and local elders attended the ceremony. Health officials shed light on the arrangements made to make the polio eradication campaign a success.

The lawmaker appreciated the efforts of health department to help root out several dangerous diseases like polio goes from the society.

Mr Marwat asked the polio vaccination teams to cover their target areas to make the drive a success. He assured his cooperation to the health department and other stakeholders to ensure coverage of refusal cases.—Correspondent

Nato supplies

NOWSHERA, Jan 28: The Jamaat-i-Islami has threatened to encircle the parliament house on Feb 3 to protest against what it said an alleged plan to restore supply to Nato forces in Afghanistan.

This was stated by JI naib amir Merajuddin, general secretary Nowshera Mian Mayar Shah and naib amir Nowshera Haji Inayatur Rehman, while speaking at a press conference here on Saturday. They said that people for the first time felt as an independent nation when government suspended the Nato supplies in reaction to the Nato attack on Pakistani security checkposts at the boarder with Afghanistan.

People would not allow the government to restore Nato supplies and if the government did so then people would march on Islamabad on Feb 3.—Correspondent

Use of iodised salt urged

LAKKI MARWAT, Jan 28: Micronutrient Initiative (MI) with the assistance of Ask Development, an NGO, held a debate competition among school students on usefulness of iodised salt here on Saturday.

Students delivered speeches on the usefulness and benefits of iodised salt in daily diet. MI representative Sadiq Hussain and teachers were also present on the occasion.

Nadeem stood first while Izhar and Iftikhar got second and third positions in the competition, respectively.

After distributing cash prizes among position holder students, the MI representative Sadiq Hussain said that iodine deficiency could cause complications in men, women and children. He said that iodine deficiency was a major public health problem in many countries, including Pakistan, and it could be easily addressed by using iodised salt.—Correspondent

Cricket team felicitated

PESHAWAR, Jan 28: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Minister for Information Mian Iftikhar Hussain congratulated cricket team captain Misbah-ul-Haq and other players for securing a thumping victory against England in the second Test.

In a felicitation message on Saturday, Mian Iftikhar said that there was no dearth of talent in the country and victory always became the destiny of Pakistan cricket team whenever they fought with utmost dedication and willpower.He praised the spirit, teamwork and hard work of the team and expressed the hope that the team would exhibit professional exuberance in future too.—APP
