Four killed in Swabi

SWABI, Dec 10: Four people, including a constable, were killed in different incidents here on Saturday.

Unidentified gunmen shot dead Asad Ali, constable at the Chota Lahor police station, while he was on way to the police station. The attackers escaped. It was stated that the deceased had an enmity in his village.

Gul Rehman, a rickshaw driver and resident of Zaida village, was shot dead in Marghuz area by unidentified attackers. Police said cause of the killing was not known.

Danish Nawaz, also hailing from the Zaida village, committed suicide after taking some poisonous substance. The cause of the suicide was stated to be joblessness.

Sajjid Khan, a youngster, drowned in the River Indus. His body was later recovered.—Correspondent

Youth shot dead

KOHAT, Dec 10: The police blocked traffic on the Kohat-Hangu road for the safety of passengers after rival groups exchanged indiscriminate fire following murder of a youth in Muhammadzai here on Saturday.

Khalid Khan, father of the deceased, Tasleem Khan, told police members of local peace committee, Majid Khan and Shah Nawaz, killed his son after exchange of hot words with him. He said the accused had asked them not to water their ‘own’ fields in Zawaki Banda.

The aggrieved party after burying the deceased attacked the houses of the killers with firearms, who also retaliated. A pedestrian and member of Muhammadzai Welfare Tanzeem, Laiq Khan, were injured in the crossfire. The firing was so intense that the police had to intervene.—Correspondent

‘Save Peshawar drive’

PESHAWAR, Dec 10: JUI-F will launch ‘Save Peshawar’ drive from Monday by setting up a protest camp at Chowk Yadgar to highlight problems being faced by the residents.

This was stated by the JUI-F Peshawar district amir Qari Rafiq Shah while speaking at a press conference at Peshawar Press Club on Saturday.

Rafiq Shah said the government was least bothered to undertake development of the provincial metropolis.

He said mass contact driver would also be launched from Dec 20 to Jan 5 in different union councils of the district.

In the prevailing situation, he said the people were feeling insecure, while traffic problems and lack of basic health facilities had further aggravated the situation.—Bureau Report

Chrysanthemum show

PESHAWAR, Dec 10: Peshawar Corps Commander Lt-Gen Khalid Rabbani on Saturday inaugurated a three-day annual chrysanthemum show at Garrison Park in the cantonment. The corps commander also distributed prizes amongst the winners.

Governor Challenge Cup was won by Air Headquarters while Cantonment Board Peshawar lifted Chief Minister Challenge Cup runner up trophy.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr Rabbani said taking part in such exhibitions gave people an opportunity to have aesthetic sense and compliment wonders of nature. “Plants make our environment beautiful, pollution free and the world a better place.” The inauguration session, organised by Cantonment Board Peshawar and Station Headquarters Peshawar Cant, was attended by people belonging to all walks of life.—Bureau Report

Road construction

UPPER DIR, Dec 10: The people of 17 villages on Saturday took out a rally to protest construction of a road along the Kohistan river from Chukiatan to Sheringal.

The existing road to Sheringal, which runs along the left bank of the river, passes through these villages. The new road, being built along the right bank, would divert traffic from the old road, which is already in bad shape, the protesters said. The length of the new road has been estimated to be 35 kilometers which would cost Rs980 million. The protesters said the population of these villages was living near the existing road, adding construction of the new road would deprive majority of the people of transport facility.—Correspondent

Blood donation

PESHAWAR, Dec 10: Students of Peshawar Public School and College on Saturday donated hundred bags of blood to Khun-i-Jigar Foundation Welfare Hospital and Blood Services Peshawar to help the needy and ailing community across the province.

According to a press release chairman of the foundation Aslam Marwat said the foundation was providing free of cost screened blood facility for the patients of blood cancer, kidney diseases, maternity and thalassaemia.

He said the ratio of blood diseases was increasing with each passing day and it was obligatory on people to help these patients on priority basis.—Bureau Report

Rift in Nowshera PPP

NOWSHERA, Dec 10: Differences between PPP and its provincial Minister for Irrigation Pervez Khattak have deepened after the latter refused to resolve rifts with the party leadership.

Reliable sources disclosed that a three-member reconciliation committee comprising provincial general secretary Dost Mohammad Khan, information secretary Ayub Shah and Yawar Khwja tried to convince Pervaz khattak, during a visit to his home the other day, but to no avail.

The sources added Pervez Khattak demanded that the party co-chairman President Zardari should talk to him personally. The sources said Pervez Khattak along with his group may join the PTI.—Correspondent

Training programme

LAKKI MARWAT, Dec 10: An ‘unarmed training programme’ for personnel of law enforcement agencies concluded here at the army base camp at Tajazai the other day.

Army soldiers, personnel of FC, police and levies participated in the training activity. A karate competition was also held among the army jawans and personnel of law enforcement agencies. They demonstrated skills they were imparted in the training exercise.

Station Commander Bannu Brig Akhtar Nawaz distributed certificates among the cops and soldiers and appreciated their high morale. He said the training was aimed at equipping the personnel of law enforcement agencies with the skills to carry out their job in risky situations effectively.—Correspondent

Girls school be upgraded

KARAK, Dec 10: The elders of Karak city have demanded that the government girls’ high school in old bazaar should be upgraded to higher secondary level.

Awami Rabita Committee old bazaar organiser Hafiz Mohammad Yaseen Khattak, Malik Sajid and Aslam Khan informed in a press conference here on Saturday that the said school had been established about forty years ago but due to lack of interest from the high-ups the school could not be upgraded. They added only educational staff was needed for the school to start the inter classes in the school. They said the poor students would be able to continue education after matriculation if the school was upgraded.—Correspondent
