RAWALPINDI, Dec 3: A woman tried to commit suicide after killing her mother and a six-month-old niece in the suburbs of the city on Saturday.

The Chontra police said Saima Ghafoor, 30, slit the throats of her 57-year-old mother Begum Jan, widow of Abdul Ghafoor, and her niece Mahreen Fatima in their Chak Beli house and then tried to commit self-immolation.

After hearing the noise, the neighbours reached the house and saved the accused, who received minor burn injuries to the legs.

“Saima was divorced about two years back after her in-laws came to know that she was mentally disturbed,” said Mohammad Aslam, the police investigation officer.

She was undergoing treatment in a local hospital and lived with her two brothers.

The IO said FIR had not been registered against the woman. Her brothers were not willing to conduct a medical test on the accused but later in the night they agreed for the medical examination and postmortem on the bodies.

He said an FIR would be lodged after completing all the legal requirements.
