HYDERABAD, Aug 13: Second strike in a week was observed across Sindh on Saturday in protest against the revival of the Sindh Local Government Ordinance-2001 and to press the provincial government to restore commissioner system.

The call for strike was given by the Sindh Bachayo Committee, an alliance of different nationalist parties of Sindh, and supported by other political parties -- including Awami National Party, Pakistan Muslim League-N, Pakistan Tehrik-i-Insaf and Jamaat Islami -- as well as transporters and traders

Only in Mirpurkhas and Sanghar towns the strike was partial. However, the strike was marred by incidents of violence in Hyderabad resulting in the death of a Sindh Taraqqi Pasand (STP) activist and injuries to over one dozen others, including a police constable and a Rangers sepoy.

Offices of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement were torched in Dhabeji, Thatta district.

In different cities and towns of Sindh, activists of the nationalist parties took out processions and held demonstrations. At some places they burnt the effigies of some leaders of the Pakistan People's Party.

In Nawabshah, police resorted to aerial firing and tear gas shelling in which several activists were injured.

In Hyderabad, complete strike was observed amid incidents of violence on Friday night in which four people -- Faizan, Shahzad, Rashid and Ehsan -- received bullet injuries at Liberty Market. A bus of LUMHS, a van and a vehicle were torched.

Aerial firing was reported from Sabzi Mandi, Haider Chowk and other areas. Following these incidents, police ordered petrol pumps to remain closed.

On Saturday, workers of the STP, Sindh United Party and Awami Tehreek held demonstrations.

Dilshad Abro was shot dead in Hirabad and Faisal Yousuf, Mohammad Shakir, Imran Qureshi and Zamir Abro received bullet injuries and were taken to civil hospital.

STP chairman Dr Qadir Magsi and a large number of party activists gathered at the hospital. Some people resorted to aerial firing which created panic and harassment among patients and their attendants.

Later, speaking at a press conference, Dr Magsi said that they would lodge an FIR regarding the killing of Abro against Sindh chief minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah and four MQM activists. He named the four activists and said that two of them had been arrested.

In Bhitai town, policeman Mohammad Hassan and Ghulam Shabbir of Rangers were fired upon and injured. An SUP activist, Arbab Qambrani, also received bullet injuries.

In the evening, Liaq Khaskheli, Waseem Jathyal and Khalid Channa were also fired upon and injured. A police coaster and a motorcycle were torched in Qasimabad area.

According to the medical superintendent of the hospital, a body and 13 injured were brought to the hospital. The situation in the city remains tense.

Police claimed to have arrested 35 people on the charge of being involved in aerial firing and torching of vehicles. Police said 12 pistols, crackers, petrol bottles and motorcycles were recovered from their possession.

In Umerkot complete shutter down was observed and rallies were staged. Five activists of different nationalist parties were arrested.

Partial strike was observed in Mirpurkhas while complete strike was observed in Mirwah Gorchani, Digri, Tando Jan Mohammad, Jhuddo and Kot Ghulam Mohammad. Nationalist parties staged demonstrations outside local press club.

In Dadu and Jamshoro districts complete shutter down strike was observed and transport were not seen on roads and Indus Highway

In Dadu town, crackers were hurled by unidentified people at Cinema Chowk and Katchehry road.

Activists of nationalist parties took out rallies in Thatta and other towns of the district.

In Dhabeji, the enraged protestors set on fire the sector offices of the MQM in Bilal Nagar and Shaikh Majeed Colony.

In Nawabshah, a large number of activists took out a procession which was joined by a group of lawyers.

Police resorted to aerial firing and tear gas shelling to disperse the protesters as a result a large number of them fell unconscious. A number of activists have been taken into custody by the police.

Complete strike was observed and processions were taken out in Larkana, Sukkur, Jacobabad, Shikarpur, Ghotki, Naushahro Feroze and other cities and towns of Sindh.
