KARACHI, Aug 10: An activist of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement was gunned down in Pak Colony on Wednesday, police said.

They said armed riders fired at Akbar near Dhobi Ghaat that left him badly wounded. He was shifted to the Civil Hospital Karachi where he died during treatment, they added.

The area police said that the victim was a resident of the same area and also associated with the unit-32 of the MQM’s organisational structure in the locality.

“The victim was walking home when the armed motorcyclists attacked him,” said an official at the Pak Colony police station. However, he said that the jurisdiction of the crime was not yet decided.

“There is a dispute between the Pak Colony and Garden police stations over the jurisdiction of the place of the incident.

Legal formalities will be followed after the jurisdiction issue is settled,” he added.

In an early morning incident, a 54-year-old man was shot dead minutes after he left home for work. An official at the Saeedabad police station said that victim Yousuf Baloch alias Babu was attacked near Noorani Ground by armed riders.

“He was hit by three bullets in the leg, chest and face,” the official said. “The victim was father of five and working as a driver with the city government. The motive and people behind his killing are not known yet.”

A young man, who was released on bail from the Karachi central prison a couple of months ago, was shot dead near Jama Cloth Market.

The area police said that 29-year-old Asif Jameel was working as a salesman at a shop near Jama Cloth, where he was targeted by two men on motorbikes.

“He was hit by a single bullet in the head and died on the spot. He came out of prison a few months ago on bail. He was booked and arrested in illegal arms and robbery cases. The murder appears to be linked with his criminal record,” said an official at the Aram Bagh police station.

Two bodies in gunny bags

Two bullet-riddled bodies stuffed in gunny bags were found in different areas, police said.

They said that the body of a young man was found in the Shershah area near Pankha Hotel. The body was shifted to the Edhi morgue after completing medico-legal formalities at the civil hospital for want of identification.

The body of another young man stuffed in a gunny bag was found in a garbage dump near Nishtar Road.

An official at the Risala police station said that the victim, clad in blue trousers and a white shirt, was hit by a single bullet in the head.
