RAWALPINDI, July 13: An infant girl was killed and her mother's legs were fractured when a motorbike rider doing wheeling lost control and hit them near Waris Khan police station on Tuesday night, the victim's family said.

The boy accompanying the motorcyclist was captured by onlookers as he fell on the road. He was identified as son of a police inspector posted at the office of City Police Officer (CPO). The motorcyclist doing wheeling escaped.

Yasin Hussain, son of Inspector Safdar Hussain, was produced in the court on Wednesday. He was granted bail.

When the bike hit Umaira Usman, her five-month old daughter Safa Usman in her lap fell on the road, suffering fatal head injury.

Mukhtiar Ahmed, a brother-in-law of injured Umaira, told Dawn that his cousin Mohammad Usman Chohan was on way to home after having meal in a restaurant along with his wife, who was carrying the daughter.

“I saw Usman and Umaira crossing the road, which was clear. But all of a sudden two motorbikes on which four young boys were riding appeared and one of them hit the family.”

He added that the motorbike which hit the mother and the daughter was without headlight and registration plate. Though the motorbike rider sped off, the pillion rider was captured by the people as he fell down. Mukhtiar said after the motorbike rider hit Umaira, the little girl was thrown away on the road.

He said the injured mother and daughter were rushed to Benazir Bhutto Hospital, but added that the victims were not properly attended. “Treatment started half an hour after we reached the hospital and by that time Safa had died.”

There were moving scenes at the hospital as the injured mother kept calling for her daughter.

Mukhtiar asked the police top officers to visit the area outside the Waris Khan to see how the young motorcyclists were doing wheeling, putting theirs and others lives in danger.
