Woman found strangled

CHAKWAL, June 24: A married woman who went missing from her house on Thursday noon was found strangled at the house of her negibour on Friday morning, relatives and police told Dawn.

Fateh Bibi, 32, was living in Askari locality of Chakwal city with his husband and three daughters.

Mohammad Ishaq the husband of Fateh Bibi told Dawn that her wife worked as a domestic worker at the house of Ghulam Murtaza. “We assumed that she might have gone for work and would return in the evening but when she did not return we launched a hunt for her,” Ishaq said.

He said that a girl of the locality informed them that she saw Fateh Bibi going to the house of Ghulam Abbas carrying a basket to fetch water.

He said that when they asked Ghulam Abbas, a motorbike mechanic in his early sixties, to open the door of one of his locked room he refused and went inside the house and did not return.

He said they waited for Ghulam Abbas till 10 pm and then informed the police, he said.

“When we broke the lock of the room, we saw Fatheh Bibi lying dead on a cart. A rope was tied around her neck with blood oozing out from her ears and mouth”, Investigation Officer Altaf told Dawn. — A Correspondent

Annual sports day

MURREE, June 24: The Annual Sports Day 2011 was held at Lawrence College Ghora Gali here on Friday.

General Officer Commanding (GOC) 12 Division Major General Sohail Ahmed Khan, who is also the chairman of the college executive committee, was the chief guest on the occasion. A large number of parents, old Gallains and other distinguished guests including military and civil officials were also present at the event. On his arrival, the chief guest was received by Principal Air Commodore (retired) Farooq Hussain Kiyani and the members of the faculty.

At the end, the chief guest accompanied by the principal gave away the prizes to the winners. Raza Shah Shaheed Trophy was clinched by Adnan Ali Bajwa of Wright House Senior School. — Correspondent

Wapda workers stage sit-in

TAXILA, June 24: The Wapda Paigham Labour Union staged a sit-in in front of the Iesco offices, Wah Cantt in protest against the withdrawal of free electricity units to the Wapda employees.

Vice President Pakistan Wapda Paigham Labour Union Mohammad Ishfaq while addressing to the protesters said that the facility granted to the employees under an agreement could neither be withdrawn nor be curtailed. He said that the government was following anti-workers policies as it was depriving the workers of their basic right. He warned if their demand was not met, the Wapda employees would launch a countrywide protest. — Correspondent

Threatening call

ISLAMABAD, June 24: Security in and around the Police Line Headquarters was further tightened after receiving a threatening call that the police lines would be blown, police said on Friday.

Shortly after receiving the call at Rescue-15 the other day, the capital police were on their toes to counter the threat and the security was tightened at the police lines which houses thousands of policemen and officers.

The headquarters’ different blocks, residential areas and offices were got vacated and search was conducted to spot something suspicious or some suspected person.

The search continued for a couple of hours as the bomb disposal squad was called out and sniffer dogs were used. During the search, the headquarters was surrounded by the policemen including the anti-terrorist squad. After the search, the headquarters was declared safe and clear. — Staff Reporter
