LAHORE, June 20: Iqbal Town division police claim to have arrested 25 members of eight gangs allegedly involved in robberies, street crime and thefts in a week.

Police recovered Rs5.4 million in cash, gold ornaments, 74 cell phones, five cars, 29 motorcycles, besides illegal weapons and bullets, from possession of the accused.

The looted property was handed over to the victims after a news conference held at the Iqbal Town SP Operations office on Monday.

DIG (Operations) Ghulam Mehmood Dogar and Iqbal Town SP Muntazir Mehdi told reporters these gangs had been operating in different parts of Iqbal Town (IT) division.

He said the IT division had topped in the weekly performance evaluation.

He said the weekly performance evaluation initiative had been taken in order to promote a sense of competition among all the six police divisions of the city.

The gangs include Mansoora gang, Ijaz Jutt car snatcher gang, Ameer alias Ameeri gang, Moazzam alias Maoji gang, Naseem alias Kala gang, Yaseen Dogar gang, Zeeshan alias Shani gang and etc.

The police had traced around 60 cases registered against the 25 arrested suspects, he added.

The DIG said police recovered a jamming device from Yaseen gang which was used to deactivate the trackers installed in cars, adding the recovery of the device from a crime gang was a matter of serious concern which was being investigated.He called upon the divisional SPs to remain in contact with media people and also seek their feedback on different steps being taken by the police to improve law and order.

Later, the DIG handed over the booty recovered from the outlaws to the owners concerned.
