Two shot dead

SWABI, June 2: A man and a woman were shot dead, latter by her son, over petty issues here on Thursday.

Police said Waqar Ahmad, a resident of Doubain, after developing differences with his mother over some domestic issue, opened fire killing her on the spot.

Sukhanuddin, father of the deceased, registered FIR against his grandson in Yar Hussain police station.

In Jalsai village of Chota Lahor, Riaz Khan allegedly shot dead Thareef Khan over some trivial issue, said Jamil Khan, brother of the deceased, while registering FIR with police.—Correspondent

Man gunned down

NOWSHERA, June 2: A property dealer was killed allegedly over an old enmity at Pabbi here on Thursday.

Liaqat Ali, brother of the deceased, Mehboob Ali, registered FIR in Pabbi police station, saying his brother was killed by Maqsood Alam. He told the police the accused had called the victim on his mobile phone and asked him to meet outside their home.Meanwhile, a man who was injured in an attack on his father, a police inspector, died in hospital in Peshawar on Thursday.

Inspector Haji Mohammad Irshad was killed along with his uncle Arshad Hussain on May 30 at Hakimabad, Nowshera by their rivals. His son Raj Mohammad was seriously injured in the attack who died in the Lady Reading Hospital.—Correspondent

Murder condemned

LAKKI MARWAT, June 2: Local journalists on Thursday condemned the brutal murder of a senior colleague, Saleem Shahzad, demanding of the government to trace the killers and bring them to justice.

At a meeting of the district press club chaired by president Hafiz Minhajud Din in Tajazai on Thursday, the participants said Saleem Shahzad’s murder indicated that journalists were not safe at all.

They said the government had failed to provide security to the working journalists. “The world community is concerned over the consistent incidents of journalists’ killing in Pakistan”, they said, calling upon the government to arrest the killers and take measures for providing security to the journalists. — Correspondent

‘People-friendly’ budget

PESHAWAR, June 2: Chief Minister Ameer Haider Hoti has said the coming budget will be people-friendly and a step toward achieving self-sufficiency.

He said a large chunk of resources would be allocated to productive sectors including hydel power, minerals, tourism and industry to produce means for increasing earnings of the province.

This he said while talking to MPAs during his weekly meetings at his office here on Thursday.

Mr Hoti said priority had been given to the ongoing development schemes. He said employment schemes had achieved wider acceptance and implementation on such schemes will continue with such spirit and be further extended to benefit more and more people. The government’s steps for eradication of poverty, unemployment and illiteracy, he said, would help control extremism.—Bureau Report

Police kill ‘attacker’

PESHAWAR, June 2: Police on Thursday shot dead a man after he allegedly opened fire on a patrol party in the limits of Tekhal police station. A policeman also sustained injuries in the crossfire, police said.

An official of the Tehkal police station said riders’ squad personnel were on routine patrol in the Gulai Baba area near Ghundai refugee camp that a man armed with pistol opened fire on them.

The fire, he said, caused injuries to policeman, Hameed Khan. However, the deceased could not be identified till filing of this report. The body and the injured policeman were shifted to hospital.—Bureau Report

Development schemes

LANDI KOTAL, June 2: The Khyber Agency administration has completed various development projects, says a press release issued on Thursday.

The administration constructed a tube well, a pump house, five water storage tanks, installed a pump and laid a 4,000 meters of distribution pipeline in Ridwan Ullah Kili in Jamrud tehsil. The administration also completed another project in Dost Mohammad Kili in Landi Kotal.

The project included construction of a 45-meter flood wall, installation of a pump, rehabilitation of 31 meters of boundary wall, installation of 1,000 meters of distribution pipeline and complete electrification of the system via a 50KVA transformer. —Correspondent

Power suspension

KARAK, June 2: Takht Nusrati bazaar and other areas are without power for last 24 hours due to collapse of a pylon in Tordhand area, creating problems for the residents particularly shortage of water.

A delegation of elders led by Khattak Ittehad former president Bahadar Khan met Pesco executive engineer, Mohammad Sadiq Khan Dawar, on Thursday and complained that the power suspension had created drinking water problem in the localities.

They demanded restoration of power supply as early as possible.

The Pesco official said efforts were on to repair the pylon at Takht Nusrati feeder, which collapsed due to windstorm the other day.—Correspondent

IDPs hold demo

PESHAWAR, June 2: Dozens of IDPs at Jalozai camp on Thursday held a protest demonstration at Sher Shah Suri Road against stopping of food items to them by the authorities.

The protesters led by PTI Fata leaders held banners and placards inscribed with demands for restarting the food items.

Talking to journalists, PTI leader Iqbal Afridi said the staff of Afghan Commissionerate used to sell cold drinks, biscuits in the open market in the past, however, they continued supply of sugar, wheat floor but now supply of everything had been stopped for unknown reasons. He said 3,000 people had already registered themselves for the cash cards but were yet to get any relief.—Bureau Report

Poster competition

PESHAWAR, June 2: The 20th annual poster competition and exhibition was organised on Thursday by Pakistan Science Foundation (PSF) with the theme as “Biodiversity of Pakistan”.

According to a press release, Prof Dr Manzoor Hussain Soomro, PSF chairman, was chief guest. In his address Mr Soomro said the young minds expressed their capabilities in an impressive way by depicting their understanding on the burning issues related to science. “This surely shows their sensitivity and level of awareness to such issues”.

He highlighted the importance of biodiversity in cultural conditions and its possible ways of expansion.—APP
