KESC
“You cannot sit in Islamabad and decide about the fate of 20 million people of Karachi,” said Dr Qazi Ahmad Kamal, while expressing strong reservations about KESC's performance and contentions in the petition.

KARACHI: The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) allowed on Tuesday an increase of 96 paisa in the tariff of the Karachi Electric Supply Company (KESC) under the head of fuel adjustment charges.

The decision was announced in Islamabad after a 'public hearing' on the KESC's plea for an increase of Rs1.06 for the month of December 2010.

However, a Nepra spokesperson said the increase would not be passed on to consumers because of a stay granted by the Sindh High Court on a petition against the KESC.

Dr Qazi Ahmad Kamal, representing the Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry, said the notice for the hearing had been received on Jan 29.

“You cannot sit in Islamabad and decide about the fate of 20 million people of Karachi,” he said, while expressing strong reservations about KESC's performance and contentions in the petition.

The Nepra spokesperson said a detailed written order would be issued in a couple of days.
