LARKANA, Jan 31: Police have arrested an impostor, Abdul Haque Chandio, posing himself as an agent of the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) near the directorate of education here on Monday.

Shafqat Ali, spokesman of the BISP, Sindh chapter, told this correspondent on Monday that police had arrested the impostor red-handed while he was trying to fleece poor families by making false promises of providing them mobile phones.

He was collecting Rs1,000 from each person per mobile phone, he said. Police have registered an FIR against the impostor.

The spokesman said that soon after the matter was brought into the notice of Larkana director of BISP, he took immediate action and had the fake agent arrested.

SHO of Waleed police station Riaz Abbasi said that the fake agent was collecting money and Computerised Identity Cards from poor families who had gone to the BISP office for getting their names registered in the programme.

He said that an FIR had been registered on the complaint of Aktar Hussain Mirbahar, residing near EDO (education) office, and the accused was booked under sections 420 and 418.

The CNIC of the complainant and the amount he had given to the accused had been recovered from his possession, the SHO said. The accused had confessed to have committed the crime, the police official said.
