KARACHI: Playing for the first time in the fifth World Youth Scrabble Championship (WYSC) in Manila, Philippines, Pakistani youth Shazaib Khatri created a sensation by winning six out of seven matches to take the third position on the opening day on Wednesday.
The biggest upset of the day was Shazaib's victory against the No 1 youth player in the world Michael McKenna of Australia, a hot favorite to win this championship.Meanwhile, another Pakistani player Umair Khalidi won five out of seven matches to get the 19th position.
The biggest score of the championship was also scored by Pakistan's Shahroz Zamir when he scored an incredible 610 points.
Oluwafemi Akinlosot of Nigeria is currently placed on the top position.
The event features 87 youth players from all over the world, including eight from Pakistan. There is also a tournament for adults being held on a round robin league basis at the same venue. Pakistan's Tariq Pervez won his first round and was elevated to the 'B' group.
