FAISALABAD, Nov 22: The district administration on Monday seized at least 35,000 bags of sugar hoarded in a mills in Jaranwala.

The Jaranwala police have registered a case against the mills management under the Price Control Act.

DCO Naseem Sadiq along with officials of the revenue and Jaranwala town municipal administration raided Husein Sugar Mills and recovered 35,000 bags stockpiled there for profiteering.

Talking to reporters, the DCO said the crackdown on hoarders of sugar would continue and the elements involved in this monkey business would be taken to task.

He said more than 7,000 sugar bags had been sold in two days at the wholesale price of Rs3,450 per 50 kg bag on 48 sales points set up by the city district government.

Mr Sadiq said the retailers were bound to sale sugar on the government-fixed price of Rs72 per kg, either local or imported commodity.

The DCO said some 145 fair price shops had also been established in the district to sell the sugar on control rate for the convenience of the public.

He said sufficient stock of the sweetener had been supplied to these fair price shops while eight sales points were already selling sugar on subsidized rate of Rs63 per kg in the district on the instructions of the Punjab government.

Sixteen price control magistrates had been mobilized to check the sugar price in the open market and profiteers would not be spared, he said.

The DCO warned the sugar dealers to bring their stock in the open market or ready to face the music.
