KARACHI, Feb 3: The Karachi Water and Sewerage Board on Tuesday disconnected two private hydrants eight illegal connections in Manghopir area which they had taken from a 66-inch diameter main pipeline.

According to the KWSB chief engineer of bulk supply, Najm-e-Alam Siddiqui, two private hydrants located in Manghopir had taken eight illegal water connections of two-inch diameter by puncturing the main pipeline of 66-inch diameter.

He said that the drive against illegal water connections would continue till all illegal connections were severed, adding that over 16 illegal private hydrants were working in the Manghopir area.

He said the SITE town’s nazim, Izharuddin, was supervising the drive with the cooperation of the KESC, SITE town municipal administration and the KWSB and revenue department officials.

A similar action would be taken against all those private hydrants which were being run in the city by taking illegal connections from KWSB pipelines, he said.

Meanwhile, sources in the KWSB said that the water supply position in Manghopir and in nearby localities would improve considerably after the disconnection of illegal water connections of private hydrants.

Complaints against low water pressure would also be addressed, the sources said.

However, they were of the view that the water board should launch a sustained campaign against unauthorised water connections rather than running such drives on an ad hoc basis.
