LAHORE, Dec 25: Habib Bank Limited (HBL), Wapda and Navy also made it to the quarter-finals of the NBP Gold Cup Hockey Tournament, completing the last eight line up at the National Hockey Stadium here on Thursday.
Hosts National Bank of Pakistan (NBP) along with PIA, Pakistan Steel Mills, Army and Port Qasim had already reached the quarter-finals earlier.
The knockout phase begins Dec 28 after a two-day rest. NBP will take on Navy, while Wapda will face Army. Similarly, Pakistan Steel Mills will lock horns with the national carriers and Port Qasim Authority (PQA) will face HBL.
Meanwhile, five matches were played.
A four-goal rally by Rana Zubair enabled HBL to steamroll Sindh 13-1, after gaining a 6-1 lead in the first half. Zubair fired home in the 7th, 41st, 46th and 59th minutes. Shahbaz Ali ably supported Zubair with a three-goal tally, finding the net in the 14th, 18th and 61st minutes. Rashid Imran (17th and 21st) and Nasir (50th and 57th minutes) contributed two goals each. Saleem Khalid and Ayaz Rasool added one goal each in the second and 64th minutes, respectively, to complete the tally. The only goal from Sindh came through Sarfraz in the 35th minute.
Three-goal Zakir helped Wapda thrash Punjab 5-0 after taking a 1-0 lead in the first half. Zakir struck in the 39th, 53rd and 57th minutes while Zia-ur-
Rehman (second minute), Shabbir Ahmed (57th) were the other scorers.
Navy shaped up a 5-2 win against Balochistan. The score was 3-0 at halftime in favor of the seamen. Muzammil entered two goals in the 8th and 21st minutes, while Mohammad Iqbal, Mohammad Imran and Rashid Mahmood scored one each in the 23rd, 49th and 57th minutes. Danish and Wasif netted one each for the losing side.PQA also drafted an easy 3-1 win against Railways. The score at halftime was 1-0 in favour of the winners. Khalid, Samiullah and Bakar scored one each for PQA while Shahzad Islam slammed in the solitary goal for the losing outfit.
Army crushed Pakistan Air Force 4-0. All goals were scored in the first half. Waqas of Army scored two in the 3rd and 7th minutes, while Mohammad Arshad and Mohammad Safeer scored one each in 4th and 35th minutes.
