STRASBOURG, Dec 6: FIFA, world football’s governing body, is confident that the 2010 World Cup in South Africa will be a success, an official said on Friday.

Speaking on the sidelines of a Council of Europe meeting of experts in security at international football matches, Walter Gagg, an adviser to FIFA President Joseph Blatter, said: “Alongside the South Africans, we will organise a great tournament. We know how to do it and we are confident.

“We are working with their organising committee, there are meetings and we have a team of about 15 people who are already in place in South Africa,” added Gagg.

FIFA, he further said, knew a thing or two about organising tournaments in Africa.

“We have organised the Under-20 world junior championships in Nigeria, that wasn’t easy, and next year there’s the Under-17s in Nigeria and the under-20s in Egypt.”—AFP
