ISLAMABAD, Dec 3: Pakistan’s only hope, in the ITF Pakistan Women Futures tennis tournament was dashed when Sarah Mehboob Khan was ousted in the quarter-final by India’s Kumari Sweta in straight sets 6-3, 6-0, at the PTF Tennis Complex on Wednesday.
Sarah’s exit sealed Pakistan’s fate for the title run. Sarah, 17, was stunned by Sweta as the Indian built up the lead 3-1 breaking Sarah’s fourth game.
Sweta swiped some powerful cross court shots and down the line drives.
Sarah however, bounced back hard and levelled the score three all breaking the fifth game of Sweta.
The winner controlled her nerves and remained firm by playing some good backhand shots winning the first set 6-3 breaking the eighth game of the Pakistani player.
In the first set Sarah also missed some crucial points because of her sloppy game display and failure to pick even some easy backhand shots struck by Sweta. In the second set Sweta did not allowed any leeway to Sarah to settle down and won easily 6-0 with out conceding a single game.
In the other quarter-final Kim Hae Sung from Korea and Venkatesha Poojashree from India cruised into the semi-final defeating their respective opponents with out any resistance clinching the game in straight sets.
Top seed Parul Goswami also won her match in an easy decider against the Chiense player Yang Pang. Parul will now face the fourth seed Kumari Sweta in the semi-final. The semi-final will be played on Thursday.
Meanwhile, in the doubles event Venkatesha Poojashree / Parul Goswami beat Yang Pang (China) / Harshinai Reddy (India) in the straight sets 6-4,6-1.
In the other semi-final Kim Hae Sung / Shin Jung Yoon from Korea struggled hard to defeat Archana Venkataraman / Arthi Venkataraman from India in well contested straight sets 7-5, 6-1.
Venkatesha Poojashree / Parul Goswami from India and Kim Hae-Sung / Shin Jung Yoon from Korea will vie for the top honor in the women’s doubles final on Thursday.
