KARACHI, Dec 3: A 40-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly raping his teenaged daughter, who is now five months pregnant, the police said on Wednesday.

The Korangi Industrial Area police said the man, who was arrested two days ago, was booked in the case (FIR 470/2008) under Section 376 of the Pakistan Penal Code for raping the 17-year-old girl on the complaint of the suspect’s wife.

The Station Investigation Officer of the KIA police, Inspector Amjad Kalyar, told Dawn that the suspect, who hails from Sukkur, was a resident of Gulzar Colony in Korangi and owned a video cassette shop.

“We have obtained his physical custody for interrogation till Dec 10,” Inspector Kalyar said, adding that the suspect had admitted to committing the offence.

He said the suspect had been raping his teenaged daughter for the past two years.

The SIO said the victim’s mother was aware of her daughter’s rape by the suspect. “But the victim girl and her mother kept mum as the suspect had warned them of dire consequences in case they reported the matter to anyone,” he added.

Inspector Kalyar said that the victim’s mother took her to a doctor in the locality to have an abortion. “The doctor advised them to bring the suspect to book when he learnt about the acquaintance rape,” he said.

He said that the victim girl was sent to the medico-legal section of the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre for a medical examination. According to the MLO report, he said, the girl is five months pregnant.

Killed in an attack

A 34-year-old man was killed and three others were wounded when unknown gunmen opened fire on a cattle market at Malir City.

The police said that three attackers opened fire on the cattle traders at around 4pm. They said that three cattle traders were wounded, one of them fatally, in the attack.

The area SHO, Inspector Tariq Malik, told Dawn that the attack was an attempt to sabotage the peaceful atmosphere in the Bakra Peeri (cattle market). “The market is fully crowded with an unusually large number of people coming here to buy sacrificial animals due to the law and order situation around the main cattle market at Super Highway,” he added.

The victims were shifted to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre where one of them died.

Sources at the hospital’s medico-legal section told Dawn that the dead man, identified as Shadab, son of Irshad, had received a fatal bullet wound to the chest.

The injured were identified as Anver, son of Karim, Najamuddin, son of Ali Chandio, and Mohammed Yousuf. They were stated to be in a stable condition.
