Transporters observe strike

Published December 4, 2008

ABBOTTABAD, Dec 3: Transporters observed strike here on Wednesday after failure of talks with the local administration on reduced fares for inter-city routes.

The local transport authority and the district administration revised fares for inter- city and local routes according to directives of the provincial government, but transporters refused to reduce the fares.

The transporters went on strike to protest against Assistant Coordination Officer Mudassar Riaz Malik who had fined a number of drivers for overcharging passengers and not following the revised fare list.

Mr Malik said the government had issued strict orders to decrease transport fares, adding the district administration would ensure its implementation. —Correspondent
