PESHAWAR: Suspected militants surrender to police
By Ali Hazrat Bacha
PESHAWAR, Nov 17: Two suspected militants on Monday surrendered to police and took oath on Holy Quran that they would not indulge in any kind of criminal activity in the future.
Superintendent Police Nasirul Mulk Bangash administered the oath to the two brothers -- Masaud and Zahoor -- sons of Shamsur Rehman at Police Lines. NWFP Deputy Speaker Khushdil Khan was also present on the occasion.
Later, addressing a press conference, Mr Bangash said that police wanted to maintain law and order situation and serve people with professional zeal but they would not tolerate any kind of criminal activity. He asked people to extend support to police in restoration of peace and tranquility in the restive areas.
However, talking to journalists the two surrendered persons said that they were peace loving citizens and had nothing to do with militants. They blamed local volunteers for defaming them due to their political differences.
They said that they would continue to support police against criminals and would never indulge in anti-social and anti-state activities.
Meanwhile, police continued search operation in parts of disputed villages of Michni, where curfew remained imposed for the sixth consecutive day.
Two rockets fried from an undisclosed location hit the residence of a journalist Shah Nawaz Tarakzai at Bahi Korona Michini which resulted in complete destruction of the house and household items. Luckily, the family members escaped unhurt, as they had shifted to Peshawar a day earlier owing to military operation in the area.
The police tightened security in the areas close to Peshawar and continued checking of suspected people at Warsak Road, where people faced hardships due to non-availability of public transport.
A police official said that movement of people had been restricted owing to the operation in Mohmand Agency and Michini villages to avert any untoward incident.
