UN cautioned against selective implementation of resolutions

By Our Correspondent

UNITED NATIONS, Oct 14: Saying that selective implementation of the United Nations resolutions undermines world body’s credibility, Pakistan on Monday demanded that the “use of force should be consistent with the charter’s principles relating to collective security.”

“Selective implementation creates an unjust environment, deepening conflicts and compounding the suffering of the peoples,” Pakistan’s Ambassador at large K.K. Agha told the delegates attending the UN General Assembly’s 63rd session.

He called for strengthening the rule of law for realising social and economic justice, and international peace and stability.

He said that resolutions and decisions of the Security Council needed to be implemented uniformly and without discrimination, and also with equal force, irrespective of their falling within Chapter VI or Chapter VII of the UN Charter. Those Charter provisions lay the groundwork for sanctions or the use of force to implement the resolutions.

“Situations posing a threat to international peace and security must be dealt with by the United Nations, especially by the Security Council, in line with the principles enshrined in the UN Charter,” Mr Agha said in a debate on ‘The Rule of Law at National and International Levels’.
