LAHORE, Oct 9: The Punjab government has reportedly removed the objections raised by Governor Salmaan Taseer to the restoration of the divisional commissioner’s office and is sending him a summary for the promulgation of a related ordinance.

The governor had reportedly raised an objection that an earlier summary requesting him to promulgate an ordinance for the restoration of the office was sent to the Board of Revenue instead of the Local Government Department.

The governor also wanted to confirm whether the proposal to restore the divisional commissioners after re-notifying the defunct divisions clashed with the Local Government Ordinance 2001 or not.

“We have legally explained that the decision to restore the commissioners and the divisions does not clash with the ordinance. We are also sending the summary for the promulgation of an ordinance through the local government department,” an official told Dawn on Thursday.

He said the restoration had been justified by the law department by quoting different laws.

The Punjab government had decided to restore the post of divisional commissioner which was abolished at the time of the introduction of the (existing) local government system by amending the land revenue laws.

However, it faced impediment to the plan because of the objections raised by the governor after he was sent a summary for the promulgation of a related ordinance.
