Police, fans injured after UEFA Cup clashes

SOFIA, Oct 3: Six police officers and three football fans were injured following clashes after a first-round UEFA Cup match in Sofia, the Bulgarian interior ministry announced on Friday.

Some 300 fans of Bulgarian side Levski Sofia attacked police officers with stones, bottles and broken benches after their team lost to Slovak club MSK Zilina 0-1 in a second leg game on Thursday, the ministry said in a statement.

MSK Zilina won 2-1 on aggregate and now progress to the second round of the UEFA Cup.

Seven cars parked near the stadium were also damaged in the violence, the ministry added.

At the stadium after the game, Levski fans had whistled and insulted their players as they exited the pitch.—AFP
