Zulfiqar Ahmad passes away


LAHORE, Oct 3: Former Test all-rounder Zulfiqar Ahmad (82) died of cardiac arrest here at a local hospital on Friday. He was later buried in the Defence Graveyard at night.

Zulfiqar who had been ill for the last few months and who was also admitted at the Shaukat Khanum Memorial Hospital for quite some time, was taken to the Combined Military Hospital, when his condition suddenly deteriorated on Friday, where he was pronounced dead.

A dependable batsman and right-arm off-spinner, Zufliqar played nine Test matches, scoring 200 runs and taking 20 wickets.

The brother-in-law of (late) Abdul Hafeez Kardar, the first captain of Pakistan cricket team, he had the honour of playing with great Test cricketers.

He played a vital role in helping Pakistan gain the status of a Test-playing nation in 1952. He is survived by three daughters and a widow.—Sports Reporter
