PPFL to resume from Wednesday

LAHORE, Oct 3: Pakistan Football Federation’s (PFF) marathon Pakistan Premier Football League (PPFL) 2008 will resume from Wednesday, Oct 8, after the Ramazan and Eidul Fitr break, with two matches at Karachi — Karachi Port Trust (KPT) v Karachi Electric Supply Corporation (KESC) at City District Government Karachi (CDGK) Stadium and National Bank of Pakistan (NBP) v Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) at Korangi Baloch Stadium. Both the matches are to kick off at 4.00pm.

The second phase will comprise 102 matches in between Eidul Fitr and Eid ul Adha to reach finale on Dec 6 at the Army Stadium, Rawalpindi with the Army-Wapda clash.

According to Pakistan Football Federation (PFF)’s disciplinary record, seven players will serve a one-match ban for earning two yellow cards in different games. They will not be able to play in their teams’ next outings.

Two internationals — Nomi Martin Gill (Navy), Mohammad Ahmed (Khan Research Laboratories) — will miss the vital KRL-Navy clash at the KRL Stadium in Rawalpindi on Oct 11. Lahore-born Ahmed’s absence from KRL’s defence will be noticeable. Apart from leading the Pakistan U-14 and U-17 teams, Ahmed also represented the country in the U-20, U-21 and senior competition — five levels of representation in all.

Army’s coach Saqib Abbas, meanwhile, will be short of Mohammad Ramzan when the soldiers lock horns with bottom-placed Pakistan Television (PTV) at Army Stadium, Rawalpindi, the same day.

Karachi Port Trust’s (KPT) Aurangzeb will not appear against KESC at CDGK Stadium, Karachi on Oct 8.

Three players of the Punjab Medical College (PMC) — Bashir Ahmed, Mohammad Asif and Munir Ahmed — will not be able to step on to the field when PMC take on holders Wapda at Railway Stadium, Lahore, on Oct 15.

After completion of 80 out of 182 matches from July 22 to Sept 1, KPT lead the table with 23 points, followed by Habib Bank Limited (21 pts). KESC and KRL are in the third spot with 19 points each. The Afghan Club is in the fourth spot with 18 points while Wapda collected 17 points. The four-time champion Army and first timers Pak Elektron Limited managed 16 points. Next in line are Pak Steel (15), NBP (14), PMC (14), PIA (13), Navy (13) while PTV have hit rock bottom with 10 straight defeats.—Agencies
