KARACHI: Rangers’ permanent stay in KU opposed

KARACHI, Sept 18: The Karachi University Teachers Society (KUTS) has opposed deployment of the Rangers on the KU campus on a permanent basis.

“Rangers should enter the KU premises when summoned by the university administration if there is a law and order situation,” KUTS president Prof Aqil Ahmed told PPI. The Rangers should be called only when their intervention was necessary to maintain law and order, he said, renewing the KUTS call for action against those involved in the killing of innocent students on the KU campus last month.

Several students were killed and injured in a clash between activists of the All Pakistan Muttahida Students Organisation (APMSO) and the Islami Jamiat Talaba.

Those responsible for the manhandling of teachers during the violence should also be brought to justice, he said. “We are waiting for the report of the inquiry committee set up to investigate the tragic incident,” he added.

Meanwhile, KU official Qazi Salim has said that the inquiry committee has already presented its preliminary report to the competent authority. A final report, however, is yet to be submitted.
