NAWABSHAH, July 20: Police arrested a man on Sunday on suspicion that he might be involved in the murder of a 60-year-old villager, who was found axed to death in his home in Chhaha Water village, 36 kilometres from here late on Saturday night.

Daur SPO Sher Ali Jamali told journalists that police found only Shahnaz, 12, and Shah Nawaz, 9, children of Mohammed Afzal Awan, 60, at home who readily confessed to having killed their father.

But police were not satisfied with the children’s confession as it appeared more likely that they had been coerced into confession, he said and added that after some gentle prodding the harassed children told that one Gohram Zardari had asked them to confess the crime.

The SPO believed the evidence pointed finger to Gohram. He was waiting for the return of family members who had gone to Punjab and then he would file an FIR, he said.

Police did not allow journalists to meet with the children.
