Diya, WP Club register first-day victories in Super Four

By Our Sports Reporter

LAHORE July 16: Karachi’s Diya Women’s Football Club registered a record 4-0 win over Sialkot’s Vehari United in the first encounter of the opening day of the five-day Super Four tournament of the inaugural National Women’s Club Championship at Lahore’s Punjab Stadium on Wednesday.

Right-winger Urooj Hussain struck twice with skipper Hina Javed and deputy Misha Dawood as the other goal getters.

Winger Marium Laghari became the star performer for the winners with her repeated surges from the left gallery. She was also instrumental in the scoring of all the four goals. Giving no chance to Vehari United, Diya dominated the show right from the very start.

The first goal of the match emerged in the 15th minute when Marium, who also represented Pakistan in the Women’s Futsal Championship in Jordan two years ago, hooked off three markers and cut the ball into winger Urooj Hussain’s path who then hammered the ball past keeper Shoukria Rasheed.

Diya who led 1-0 at interval, continued their fine display in the second session too while the Samia Yunus-led Vehari tried all out for an equalizer through their spearhead Rafia Perveen, Tahira Akram and Shazia Javiad but Diya’s keeper Sadia Sheikh foiled their all attempts.

Diya, consolidated the lead in the 41st minute when Urooj struck her second off a rebound after fine work by midfielders Misha Dawood and Marium

Butt.

When Misha broke offside, her attempt was parried away by Vehari’s keeper. But Hina Javed was at hand to sweep the ball in with a low drive from the right corner. Misha herself recorded her name in the scoring chart with a spectacular goal in the 65th minute to complete the tally. She surged up the field after a drive rebounded off the bar, tucking the ball in with a header. The win gives Diya three points.

In the other match, Lahore’s WP Club collected an authoritative 2-0 win over Rawalpindi’s Young Rising Stars.

Both the goals were scored by spearhead Shabana Kausar who has now raised her tally to 12 goals in the competition.

WP Club, having the services of several players who clinched the national Championship at Islamabad two years ago, gave no chance to its opposition, striking once in each session to register three points.

Shabana Kausar opened the scoring in the 17th minute of the first half and added another in the 6th minute of the second session. The visitors from Rawalpindi simply failed to measure up.

Friday’s fixtures: WP Club v Diya Club at 4.30pm and Vehari United v Young Rising Star at 6.00pm.
