RAWALPINDI, July 6: Banni police here on Sunday arrested a man, who had kept his 80-year-old mother in inhumane conditions.

The police, after consulting the legal branch, booked Mohammad Yusuf under sections 342 (wrongful confinement) and 491 (breach of contract to attend to any supply/wants of a helpless person) of the Pakistan Penal Code for neglecting his sick mother, Razia Begum, and keeping her in poor condition in his house at Kartarpura.

It was on July 4 that the area police took cognizance of the matter after Musarrat Bibi, the daughter of Razia, visited her mother and found her lying on a bed, unable to move due to ailment and old age.

Musarrat along with the neighbours made a hue and cry over the condition of her mother and drew the attention of the police, The old woman was later shifted to the Holy Family Hospital (HFH) for treatment.

The woman, who had two sons and five married daughters and was living with her son Yusuf, had developed bedsores as she had been unable to move and her wounds were so bad that they could only be healed through surgery.

The procedure would be carried out after the condition of the woman was stable, as she was too weak to be operated upon, said a doctor treating Razia in HFH.

Meanwhile, a duty magistrate here on Sunday sent a woman to Darul Aman after police recovered her from the alleged illegal confinement in a house in Chorr Harpal where she had been forced into illicit activity for the last three years.

Kiran Shahzadi (25), a Kashmiri girl, in her statement under section 164 of the CrPC before Duty Magistrate Malik Shafique Ahmed, said she had not been allowed to go out by Fazal Ahmed and his wife, who were her close relatives and had forced her into illicit activities.

According to Khurram Awan advocate, who filed an application under 491 CrPC on behalf of Kaleem Rasool Bhatti, the fiance of Kiran, the Westridge police recovered the woman Saturday night from a house in Chorr. He said the woman was recovered after breaking the doors of the house and the accused couple escaped the arrest.

The lawyer told Dawn that the girl came to Rawalpindi with her mother when she was five years old and her father had divorced her mother.

The district and sessions judge (DSJ) on Saturday directed the Westridge SHO through the city police officer to recover the woman and produce her in the court on July 11 after Kaleem Rasool said in his petition that his fiancee had been kept in captivity and was being forced into illicit activities.
