SC acquits former revenue official
By Nasir Iqbal
ISLAMABAD, July 3: The Supreme Court on Thursday acquitted former secretary of the Sindh Revenue Board Khan Mohammad Mahar, under the National Reconciliation Ordinance 2007 (NRO).
He had been convicted by an accountability court on corruption charges.
The apex court declared that the law would also apply to holders of public offices facing charges in cases registered before Oct 12, 1999.
A three-member bench comprising Chief Justice Abdul Hameed Dogar, Justice Ijaz-ul-Hassan and Justice Chaudhry Ejaz Yousaf had taken up the appeal against the Sindh High Court order of upholding the conviction.
Mr Mahar was sentenced to seven years’ jail and fined Rs130 million.
Advocate Ibrahim Satti, counsel for Mr Mahar, told Dawn that his client was given the benefit of section 7 of the NRO as the corruption case against him had been initiated before October 12, 1999.
