Council seeks audit of NGOs accounts

By Our Correspondent

SANGHAR, June 25: Mem-bers of district council on Wednesday demanded that the accounts of non-governmental organisations operating in the districts be subjected to audit on a regular basis.

Members Murad Ali Nizamani, Faqir Noor Hussain, Dr Sharif, Ismail Dars and Atta Mohammad Chaniho said that the NGOs were receiving millions of rupees funds in the name betterment of people in the district but they failed to make any visible contribution in this regard.

They also voiced opposition to handing over 59 basic health units and 17 dispensaries to the NGOs, arguing that it would render health facilities more expensive and out of reach of the poor.

They alleged that the government was transferring teachers in punishment for not giving them votes.

Atta Mohammad Chaniho accused Khipro’s ADO of education of withholding teacher’s salaries on one pretext or the other and releasing it after getting bribes.

Ismail Dars alleged that the engineer of highways had made payments of more than Rs10 million to the contractors but they had not yet started work on the Sanghar-Nawabshah and the Nauabad-Jhol roads.

The members complained that chairman of zakat council had been nominated without voting and expressed fear zakat funds might be misappropriated.

They vented anger on loadshedding and said that power supply remained suspended for 12 to 16 hours daily.

The chief minister had announced end to rotation programme for canals but even this day more than 50 watercourses were closed in the district, they complained.

They demanded that a public school should be established near Sanghar so that the residents of Achhro Thar, Sinjhoro, Head Jamrao and their adjoining areas could benefit from it. Convenor Dr Mehmood Ahmed Rajput presided over the council session.
