KARACHI, May 3: The civil judge and judicial magistrate-III, Central, Khushi Mohammad, on Saturday remanded a member of a bank’s recovery team in police custody till May 7 for his alleged role in the suicide of a bank defaulter.

According to the prosecution, Mohammad Tufail Shah, 26, who had defaulted on a loan, committed suicide on April 27 by hanging himself from a ceiling fan in his house in New Karachi.

Earlier that day, a loan recovery team had visited Tufail’s house and had reportedly misbehaved with his mother and sister, which caused the debtor immense stress and depression.

The police arrested the suspect, Sheikh Mohammad Atif, the leader of the loan recovery team, on May 2. A case (FIR No 87/08) under Sections 322, 316, 504 and 506 of the Pakistan Penal Code was registered at the New Karachi police station on the complaint of the deceased’s mother.

Suspects sent to jail

The civil judge and judicial magistrate, East, Pervez Qadir Memon, remanded two suspects in judicial custody for allegedly killing a retired professor of the University of Karachi.

The court also directed the investigation officer in the case to submit a charge-sheet by May 5.

The prosecution said that the body of Dr Zeba Zakia, 75, was found dumped in the bushes on January 29 from the jurisdiction of Sachal police station. The deceased was unmarried and used to live alone in her Gulshan-i-Iqbal residence.

The police had booked the deceased’s driver, Saleem alias Shabbir, her housemaid, Khalda, and Munir Abbasi on charges of killing the retired professor. Khalda was already in jail custody.

Police have registered a case under Section 302/34 of the Pakistan Penal Code at the Sachal police station.

Meanwhile, the civil judge and judicial magistrate, Central, Sohail Ahmed, re-issued a show-cause notice to the investigation officer directing him to submit charge-sheet till May 3 in a case against three policemen who had allegedly opened fire on two motorcyclists.

According to the prosecution, the police constables, Mohammad Imran, Arif Hussain, and Salman Farsi, had allegedly opened fire on Zubair Khan and Mohammad Saqib on March 21 near Sakhi Hasan, North Nazimabad. Both the youngsters were taken to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, but Zubair was pronounced dead while Saqib was sustained serious injuries.

Earlier, the court had issued a number of show-cause notices to the IO and had also directed the SSP (investigation) west to ask the IO to submit charge-sheet, however, he failed to comply with court’s orders.

A case (FIR No 164/08) was registered under the Sections 302, 324/34 of the Pakistan Penal Code at the Taimuria police station against the policemen.
