German accused of spying for Russia

KARLSRUHE (Germany): A German man will go on trial charged with espionage for allegedly selling Russia secrets about technology that can be used for military purposes, prosecutors said on Friday.

A Bavarian identified as Werner Franz G., the man is suspected of repeatedly having contact with a Russian intelligence agent between May 2004 and December 2006.

The accused and his Russian handler met in person and also exchanged anonymous emails, federal prosecutors in Karlsruhe said.

The highly sophisticated technology in question has mainly civilian, but also military uses, they said.—AFP
