Crossing closed ‘temporarily’

Greek Cypriot police said they had temporarily closed the newly opened Ledra Street crossing through the divided capital on Thursday to protest the presence in the UN-controlled buffer zone of Turkish Cypriot policemen.

A spokesman said they had “temporarily closed the checkpoint,” after an undisclosed number of uniformed Turkish Cypriot policemen were seen in the buffer zone, in violation of an agreement that only UN peacekeepers should be there.

Government spokesman Stephanos Stephanou confirmed the statement, saying “there was a violation of the agreement causing the checkpoint to temporarily close.”

He said the crossing would reopen “once order is restored.”
