KARACHI, March 31: Three persons belonging to different political outfits were killed on Monday in different parts of the city, taking the cases of targeted killings in the current month to over 100.
Most of the victims reportedly belonged to the Mohajir Qaumi Movement-Haqiqi and the Sunni Tehrik.
However, several law-enforcers, including two officers of the Intelligence Bureau and five policemen, also lost their lives in March.
The body of a 25-year-old man was found close to a hydrant near Siemens Chowrangi in Site area on Monday morning.
A duty officer at the Pak Colony police station said that the body bore multiple bullet wounds. Police shifted the body to hospital.
The man was later identified as Anis Ahmed, an activist of the Sunni Tehrik. He was a resident of Golimar. Quoting the victim’s family members, the police said that he was kidnapped by unknown persons late on Sunday from Golimar.
The body of another worker of the Sunni Tehrik identified as Fayzan Qadri, 24, was found in Nazimabad No 1 in the limits of the Rizvia police station.
A police official said that the body was found lying close to the wall of a government school. The victim was believed to be a resident of Nazimabad. The circumstances under which the body was found suggested that he was kidnapped and later shot dead, the police official said.
The body of the ST activist was shifted to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital. Sources in the hospital said that the deceased had suffered three bullet wounds.
FIRs of both killings were not registered till the filing of this report.
In another incident, an activist of the MQM-H was shot dead in Babar Market, Landhi, on Monday evening.
A spokesman for the MQM-H said that one of the party workers of Unit-87 was sitting at his shop in Babar Market when two persons riding a motorcycle shot him dead before fleeing. The incident created panic in the market and people ran for cover as the area reverberated with the sound of gunshots.
Following the incident, police shifted the body to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre where the victim was pronounced dead on arrival.
Accident
Two persons were killed and eleven others injured in a road accident on Korangi Road on Monday night.
According to the area police, a passenger coach of the route F-11, bearing the registration number JE-7972, rammed into a pickup truck in an attempt to avoid the collision with a motorcyclist during the evening rush hour.
An injured person brought to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre told Dawn that the fast-moving bus packed with passengers rammed into a truck in the front when it tried to take a sharp turn.A police official who was present on the spot said that accident occurred due to the reckless driving of the coach’s driver.
However, police said that it was not clear whether the two persons killed in the accident were actually the passengers of the coach or were aboard the truck.
The official in charge of the emergency department of the JPMC, Dr Seemin Jamali, said that two bodies were brought to the hospital while eleven injured were provided with the necessary medical attention. However, she described the condition of three of the injured people critical. Following the accident, a state of emergency was declared in the hospital so as to tackle the situation, Dr Jamali said.
The accident resulted in severe gridlock from the stretch of a road between Qayyumabad intersection and Korangi Crossing.
Subsequently, the police diverted the traffic from Qayyumabad to Korangi Industrial Area to control the situation.
Initially, there were reports of the bus plunging into the river. But later they proved to be mere rumours, police said.
