Council backs demand for UN-led probe

SHIKARPUR, Jan 14: The Shikarpur taluka council on Monday termed Benazir Bhutto’s assassination a conspiracy against the country and demanded that the government should accept the bereaved family’s demand for a United Nations-led probe into the murder.

The council, which met here under its convenor Hafiz Abdul Ghafoor Soomro also demanded security for Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman.

The meeting was informed that public property worth Rs22 million was burnt or damaged in the taluka during riots sparked by the assassination of Benazir Bhutto.

Meanwhile, a meeting of the district cahpter of Jamaat-i-Islami presided over by the party’s acting district ameer Abdul Qadir Abro condemned Benazir Bhutto’s assassination and demanded a UN-led probe into the murder.

The meeting passed a resolution calling for an end to lawlessness and flour crisis in the district.
