LAHORE, Jan 13: The 60 to 100 favourite bay colt Desert Prince easily landed the Tandalianwala Cup, a class four handicap race contested in the over 1,200 metres distance, on a chilly Sunday afternoon during the Lahore Winter Meeting at the Racecourse.

Ridden by his regular partner in the saddle, jockey Javed Iqbal, the four-year-old colt gave trainer Tauqeer Ahmad his first big success of the season.

Desert Prince, from Bedauine Invaders out-of-Four Aces, and who is jointly owned by Mirza Khurshid Baig and Zaheer Aslam, beat Quwat by three lengths with Lucifer and Harry Can View completing the frame among the seven starters. This was the sixth race of the day.

Outclassing her dozen rivals, the grey filly Lucky Cat registered a facile win in the class five. The filly, which is owned by Malik Hamid Ali Noon and was ridden by Faheem K, a Karachi jockey, defeated Karam Pey Karam, who came from far behind, to secure the second position by three lengths of the distance. Born To Win and Zohra Jabeen II finished third and fourth.

Jockey Aamir Pervez, showing consistency in the saddle these days, registered a popular double, riding home Mannan Prince, the favourite in the third race and Handsome Hope in the following event.

After a barren last Sunday, trainer Haji Fazal Hadi was extremely lucky to saddle a brace of winners, Lucky Cat and Royal Tradition, in the fifth and seventh race.

The bookmakers and punters shared the day’s proceedings equally when four favourites won in a card of seven events. They were Mannan Prince (60 to 100), Handsome Hope (40 to 100), Desert Prince (60 to 100) and Royal Tradition (60 to 100) in the third, fourth, sixth and seventh races.

So Romantic, Diamond Sky and Lucky Cat, who won the first, second and fifth race, respectively, were available at long odds to balance the proceedings in favour of the turf accountants.
