KARACHI, Jan 11: Six workers of the Pakistan People’s Party, who were booked on charges of looting, rioting and destroying public and private property in different parts of the city in the aftermath of the assassination of former prime minister Benazir Bhutto, were released while two others were remanded in judicial custody on Friday.

A judicial magistrate, East, excising his power under Section 63 of the Criminal Procedure Code, released three PPP activists named Imran, Mohammad Alamgir and Osman against a surety bond of Rs25,000 each.

A case (FIR 365/07) was registered against them at the Korangi Industrial Area police station under Sections 147, 148, 425, 380, and 511/34 of the PPC for looting and damaging property at Bilal Chowrangi.

The additional district and sessions judge I, East, granted bail to three activists — Mohammad Asif, Ghulam Hussain and Mohammad Zahid — against a surety bond of Rs50,000 each.

Police had registered a case (FIR 463/07) at the Zaman Town police station under Sections 353, 395, 436/34 of the PPC for damaging property, vehicles and looting on the main Korangi road.

Meanwhile, a judicial magistrate, Central, remanded two PPP workers, Munawwar and Nadeem, in jail custody for arson, looting, rioting and attacking an MQM office in the Shahrah-i-Noorjehan police limits.

An FIR (2/08) was registered on the complaint of a political activist against them under Sections 147, 148, 144, 427, 435, 395 and 337/34 of the PPC.

Meanwhile, the administrative judge of the Anti-Terrorism Courts in Karachi, Khwaja Naveed Ahmed, on Friday remanded 10 accused, including two watchmen of the police scrap store, in the Gadap police custody, PPI adds.

Deedar Ali and Ayub Khan, the watchmen of the Sharafi Goth PS scrap store, were held for looting scrap from the PS on Dec 27-28, 2007. They were remanded in police custody till Jan 14.

Mohammad Bux was remanded in police custody till Jan 18 and co-accused Mohammad Bux Palari, Abbas, Mohammad Hassan, Deen Mohammad, Hidayatullah, Abdul Waheed and Ghulam Nabi were given in police custody till Jan 15.
