RAWALPINDI, Jan 3: Another newborn baby was stolen from Holy Family Hospital (HFH) on Thursday, police and hospital authorities said.

Maryam Gul, wife of Gul Mohammad Khan delivered her first baby boy in the hospital on Thursday at 10 am. Shortly after the delivery, her baby was handed over to her in the ward.

In the meantime, a woman of middle height came there and started chatting with Maryam’s mother-in-law and developed friendship with the family.

Police said the kidnapper who remained with the family for some time when saw Maryam’s husband had gone outside the hospital to buy some medicines, she asked the attendant to go to the labour room as a lady doctor was calling her.

Oblivious to what was going to happen with her daughter-in- law she left for the lady doctor. Finding the mother and her newborn baby alone in the room, the kidnapper told the baby’s mother that the lady doctor was too calling her newborn as he needed medication.

The woman took the newborn baby who was yet to be given a name and disappeared instead of going to the lady doctor.

Medical Superintendent HFH Dr Abid Shah confirmed the theft of another newborn baby boy from the hospital and said that a baby had been taken away by a woman from his parents.

However, when the Deputy Superintendent of Police Mr Sabir Nadeem was contacted he gave no further details saying that he was busy somewhere else as he had no complete details of the baby theft.

A similar incident had happened in the hospital on December 9, 2007 when a newborn baby of Najma Bibi wife of Tariq was taken away by a woman. The stolen baby is yet to be recovered by the police.

Meanwhile, a motorcycle rider was shot and injured by two unidentified gunmen who also snatched away his vehicle at gunpoint in the RA Bazar area, police said. Malik Saeed was going home on his motorcycle when two unidentified persons intercepted him and took him at gunpoint. The gunmen shot and injured him and later snatched away his vehicle.
