BALI, Dec 3: Pakistan on Monday called upon the developed countries to fulfil their commitments to urgently and effectively meet the challenges of climate change and global warming.
Speaking on behalf of the Group-77 and China at a conference of parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, Ministry of Foreign Affairs Director-General (UN) Attiya Mahmood said that without immediate and effective cuts in greenhouse gases emissions by the developed countries, all efforts to address climate change would remain fruitless.
The meeting is taking place against the backdrop of recently released ‘Synthesis Report of the IPCC Fourth Assessment’.
The report presents a stark and dire warning about the climate change.
The 13th conference, which began at Bali in Indonesia, would continue till Dec 14 with a view to finding solution to the climate change issues.
Attiya Mahmood said that the climate change posed serious risks and challenges to the developing countries that were least equipped to respond.
She said that historically they were not responsible for the climate change problem and but they were the most vulnerable to its rising dangers.
She said that the best and the most appropriate way to address the threats of climate change were to adopt and implement an integrated approach to sustainable development.
She said that making development more sustainable could help address the problem of climate change.
She emphasized that the transfer of technology remains an enormous challenge to the efforts for adaptation and mitigation keeping in view the issue of incremental costs and capacity building.—APP
