ISLAMABAD, Nov 18: The Pakistan People’s Party and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz, the two major opposition parties of the country, have decided to boycott a meeting convened by the Election Commission of Pakistan on Monday to discuss the proposed code of conduct for the next general elections.
Spokespersons for the two parties told Dawn on Sunday that they would not become a part of the “ongoing fraudulent process”.
PML-N information-secretary Ahsan Iqbal said that his party believed that elections under Gen Pervez Musharraf could not be held in a free and fair manner.
He rejected the caretaker government formed by Gen Musharraf to hold the elections.
Mr Iqbal said when there was no constitution and no judiciary then discussing the code of conduct for the elections was useless.
Media coordinator for the PPP Election Monitoring Cell, Nazir Dhoki, told Dawn that the PPP would not attend the ECP’s meeting because chief election commissioner had become a controversial figure after the presidential elections.
Moreover, he said, the CEC had not taken any action on the complaint of the party to prevent Gen Musharraf from addressing public meetings from the PML-Q platform.
He said the ECP was incomplete because it had no representation from Sindh and the NWFP.
