US envoy wants Musharraf to hang up uniform

By Ahmad Fraz Khan

LAHORE, Nov 15: After meeting PPP chairperson Benazir Bhutto here on Thursday, US Consul General in Lahore Bryan Hunt said that Gen Pervez Musharraf must take steps to restore full democratic process in the country, hang up his uniform, lift restrictions on political activities and free the media.

Talking to newsmen, Mr Hunt said his meeting with Ms Bhutto was part of his interaction with opposition leaders to convey US concerns over political developments in Pakistan.

“The US concerns are clear and have already been conveyed to all those who matter. These concerns include Gen Pervez Musharraf removing his uniform at the earliest, quickly restoring the Constitution, taking steps to ensure free and fair elections and stopping the arrests of political workers,” he said.

The consul-general had gone to the residence of Senator Latif Khosa where the Ms Bhutto has been under detention since Monday night.

The police deployed around the house first stopped but relented after seeing the official permission.
