GUJRANWALA, Nov 15: The Gujranwala Union of Journalists on Thursday organised a hunger strike camp at the press club, demanding that the government end ban on private television channels and remove restrictions on the print media.

Speaking on the occasion, union leaders criticised the government for silencing the media under the emergency. They said they would come on roads if the ban on private television channels and restrictions on the print media were not lifted immediately. Those present at the camp were wearing black armbands. They condemned Islami Jamiat Talaba for manhandling Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Chairman Imran Khan during an anti-government rally at the Punjab University’s New Campus on Wednesday and later handing him to police.

TOBA TEK SINGH: Journalists observed Thursday as protest day to condemn curbs on the print and electronic media by President General Pervez Musharraf.

A meeting at the district press club, which was addressed by press club President Manzoor Naz, General-Secretary Tariq Saeed and representatives of various non-government organisations, demanded that the government immediately remove curbs on the media. Journalists also held meetings in Kamalia and Gojra.

SIALKOT: Journalists staged a protest demonstration in Allama Iqbal Chowk against curbs on the media. The protesting journalists hoisted black flags, wore black armbands and displayed anti-government banners and placards. They also passed resolutions against the government.
