Hingis shows up at WTA event

MADRID, Nov 10: Martina Hingis made a surprise appearance at the WTA Championships on Friday, eight days after retiring because she is accused of failing a doping test.

The former top-ranked Swiss player said on Nov 1 she had been told that a urine sample taken at Wimbledon had returned a positive test for cocaine. Her ‘B’ sample also returned as positive.

The five-time Grand Slam winner announced her retirement despite denying she had doped.

“I’m sorry I cannot comment on the case for legal reasons,” Hingis said on Friday. “I’m just here to watch tennis tonight. I cannot say anything. Sorry.”—AP
