Speedy drama on 7th Avenue ends in fine

By Munawer Azeem

ISLAMABAD, Oct 31: Adventure drivers who take the 7th Avenue for a racing track got a big shock Tuesday night when they found the Islamabad Traffic Police (ITP) lying in wait to ambush them.

A special ITP squad on four motorcycles and eight cars blocked all entry and exit points on the freeway around 10pm and stopped or chased any driver violating the traffic rules .

In a span of two hours, the squad caught 98 violators and fined them a total of Rs42,300. Forty of them were issued tickets for competing in a race, 12 for wheeling, 38 for using high beam, 10 for jumping red light, five for using fancy registration plates and three motorcyclists for driving without helmets.

Seven racing cars were impounded for being run without mufflers and were released only after removing the device used to increase their speed.

While seven of the wheelers were let off with fines after their parents assured the ITP that they would no more indulge in the dangerous driving, the other five were taken to a court the next morning for doing the antic for betting money.
